As the University of Chicago enters this millennial season and this inaugural year, it continues to search for ways to perpetuate and advance its mission. But what exactly is that mission? What are our most fundamental purposes?

To promote inquiry into these vital issues, the New Collegiate Division and Student Government has sponsored three public discussions on "The Idea of The University."

Participants included the President of the University, Don Randel; the Provost of the University, Geoffrey Stone; President Emerita of the University, Hanna Gray; and five former deans.

Each lecture was held at Swift Lecture Hall, on the third floor of Swift Hall on the University quadrangles, and was followed by remarks from a distinguished panel of discussants and audience discussion.

The colloquium has been organized by a committee consisting of Dennis Hutchinson, Amy Kass, Donald Levine, Mark Oreglia, and Robert Perlman. The committee plans to issue the lectures and discussants' remarks in a single publication.
